Hardscapers

Marketing for Hardscapers
Sold in Winter, Built All Season

Paver patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, full outdoor living. Your season is about seven months long and most hardscapers start marketing in month one of it. By then the homeowners who were going to spend $80,000 have already signed with somebody who called them in February.

The terms, adjusted for a trade with a winter in it.

  • $200,000 in signed work inside 90 days, or you do not pay us.
  • One contractor per trade per market. When yours is taken, it is taken.
  • You own the ad account, the site, the CRM and the data. All of it.

On seasonal trades the 90 days runs from the start of your selling season, not the day you sign. We put the dates in the agreement.

The Problem

A hardscape season is won in the four months before it opens.

Everything difficult about marketing this trade comes from the calendar. Demand is a bell curve, your capacity is flat, and the gap between those two shapes is where the discounting happens.

Marketing starts when the phone stops

The instinct is to advertise in July when a cancellation opens a hole. The homeowner planning an $80,000 outdoor living build was researching it over the winter, and by July they are watching somebody else break ground.

Five bids on the same patio

Patio shoppers collect quotes like receipts. Without something in the funnel that separates you before the estimate, a paver patio becomes a spreadsheet and the cheapest base prep wins.

A rained-out week you cannot re-sell

Lose a crew week to weather and there is no backlog to pull forward unless the backlog was built months earlier. Capacity in this trade is perishable in a way it is not for an interior trade.

The System

Built around your season, not a generic 12-month plan

The channels are the same as every other trade. The timing is completely different, and that is most of what we are being paid for here.

  1. Step 01

    Publish before the snow melts

Patio, wall and outdoor living pages live and indexed by January, so you are ranking when the research starts rather than when the shovels do.

  2. Step 02

Sell the build, not the square foot

Ads built from your own finished work, shot properly, with the design detail visible. A homeowner deciding between five bids picks the one they can already see in their yard.

  3. Step 03

    Book design consults, not estimates

A consult with a plan and a materials selection is a different conversation from a number on a card, and it is the single biggest lever on close rate in this trade.

  4. Step 04

    Fill the shoulder weeks deliberately

Early spring and late autumn get their own campaigns and their own offers, because those are the weeks that decide whether the year was good or fine.

The Searches

Three seasons of search behaviour, not one

Hardscape search volume swings harder across the year than almost any other trade, and the intent changes shape with it. Ranking for the summer terms only is how a hardscaper ends up with a great July and a thin year.

Winter research

December to March. Low competition, long reading sessions, the biggest projects in the year.

  • paver patio cost [state]
  • outdoor kitchen ideas [climate]
  • travertine vs porcelain pavers
  • retaining wall cost per square foot
  • backyard design ideas [region]

Spring hiring

March to June. Map pack and Local Services Ads decide this, and it is decided in days.

  • paver patio installer near me
  • hardscaping company [city]
  • retaining wall contractor near me
  • paver walkway installer [city]
  • outdoor kitchen builder near me

Problem searches

All year, and the best margin work there is because the homeowner has already decided.

  • retaining wall leaning repair
  • settling paver patio fix
  • drainage problem backyard contractor
  • cracked concrete patio replacement
  • pool patio coping replacement
The Money

Outdoor living, not patios, is where the year is made

A 500 square foot paver patio is a good job. A patio with a seat wall, an outdoor kitchen, a pergola and lighting is four times the contract for maybe twice the crew days, and the homeowner searching for it is not price-shopping the same way.

So the marketing job is not more patio leads. It is being in front of the smaller number of homeowners planning a full outdoor living build, in the months when they are planning it, with photographs good enough to carry the number.

The season shape matters too. Seven selling months against twelve months of overhead means every week of the season has to be sold in advance. A hardscaper with the next eight weeks booked in April prices differently from one booking week to week, and that pricing difference is worth more than any lead volume.

Paver walkway or small patio$8K – $20K
Paver patio, 400 to 700 sq ft$18K – $45K
Segmental retaining wall$15K – $60K
Outdoor kitchen$25K – $80K
Full outdoor living build$70K – $200K+

Typical installed ranges, not our prices. Yours will differ by market and spec.

Questions

Hardscapers ask us this

Content and SEO in autumn, so the pages are indexed and ranking by the time winter research starts. Paid campaigns from January. Starting in April means paying peak ad prices to reach homeowners who already have three bids.

The window runs from the start of your selling season rather than the day you sign, and the dates go in the agreement. Signing in November means the clock starts in spring, and we use the winter to build.

That is usually the point of the first six months. The aim is a pipeline from your own rankings and your own ads, which costs less per signed job and does not resell your enquiry to the hardscaper down the road.

Design and build hardscape, yes. Recurring maintenance is a route-density and retention business rather than a search business, and it needs a different playbook than this one.

Photographs of finished work, ideally before and after, and access to your job list so we know what you actually want more of. If the photography is not there we will tell you how to shoot it, because in this trade the pictures are most of the ad.

No. One hardscaper per market. It is in the agreement, and it is the reason we turn work away.
