How homeowners use ChatGPT and AI to find a contractor, and how to be the one it recommends

The question is no longer only "kitchen remodeler near me". It is "who should I hire to redo my kitchen?", asked to a chatbot.

How do I get my contracting business recommended by ChatGPT and AI search?

AI assistants recommend contractors they can find clear, consistent and well reviewed information about. Make sure your business name, address, phone number and services match everywhere they appear, keep earning detailed Google reviews, publish pages that answer the questions homeowners ask in plain language with real prices and timelines, show proof with names and numbers, and make sure your site's text is in the page itself rather than loaded by JavaScript, because many AI crawlers do not run it.

What changed

A homeowner planning a kitchen used to type a few words into Google and click through a list. A growing number now ask a full question to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overview: who are the best kitchen remodelers near me, what should a kitchen cost here, what should I ask before hiring one. They get a written answer, sometimes naming companies, often citing the pages it learned from.

That answer is assembled from what the AI can find and trust. A contractor with almost nothing published about them, or with details that disagree from one site to the next, is easy to leave out.

What an AI assistant looks for

Consistency
The same business name, address, phone number and service list on your site, your Google profile, Facebook, Yelp, Houzz and the directories. Disagreement reads as doubt.
Reviews with detail
Plenty of recent reviews that mention the job, the town and what went well. "Great job" helps less than "they redid our kitchen in seven weeks and cleaned up every day".
Answers in plain language
Pages that answer the questions homeowners actually ask: what it costs, how long it takes, what to ask a contractor. AI assistants quote answers, not galleries.
Proof with names and numbers
Case studies and project pages with the scope, the timeline and the result. Specific beats superlative.
Text a crawler can read
Many AI crawlers fetch the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. If your site only shows its words after a script loads, they see an empty page.

The checklist

  • Audit your name, address, phone and services on your site, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Houzz, Angi and the BBB, and make them match exactly.
  • Ask every finished customer for a Google review, and ask them to mention the job and the town.
  • Publish a cost page for each main job type with honest ranges and what moves them.
  • Write an FAQ in your customers' words: the questions you answer on every site visit.
  • Turn three finished jobs into project pages with photos, scope, timeline and a quote from the homeowner.
  • Check your site with JavaScript turned off. If the words disappear, fix that first.
  • Then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity who they would recommend for your trade in your town, and see what they say about you.

What it does not replace

AI search sits on top of ordinary local search rather than replacing it. The homeowner who hears your name from a chatbot will still look you up on Google, read your reviews and decide whether your site looks like a company they want in their house. And the one who calls will still hire whoever answers first. The basics carry more weight than ever, because the AI is reading them too.

You cannot buy your way into an AI answer. You get in by being the clearest, best documented contractor in your market.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in the organic answers. Being recommended comes from consistent business details, strong reviews and pages that clearly answer homeowners' questions.
Is SEO still worth it if people use AI search?
Yes. AI answers draw heavily on the same signals as local SEO, and homeowners still check Google and your reviews before they call.
What is generative engine optimization?
Making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite: consistent details, detailed reviews, plain-language answers and readable HTML. For contractors it is mostly local SEO done thoroughly.
